DUDES WE LIKE! ~Gary Baseman

The man responsible for the term "pervasive" art, Gary Baseman (born 1960) is a contemporary artist who works in various creative fields, including illustration, fine art, toy design, and animation. He is the creator of the Emmy-winning ABC/Disney cartoon series, Teacher’s Pet, and the artistic designer of Cranium, a popular board game. Baseman’s aesthetic combines iconic pop art images, pre- and post-war vintage motifs, cross-cultural mythology and literary and psychological archetypes. He is noted for his playful, devious and cleverly named creatures, which recur throughout his body of work.

"All Hands on Deck" skate deck art show JTNY

Active artists Alliance, Arts Council For Chautauqua County and Suburban Blend have teamed together to present "All Decks On Hand - Sk8 Deck Art Show". The exhibition will open with a public reception Friday January 21 at 7pm in the new 3rd on 3rd Gallery at 116 East Third Street in Jamestown.

“All Decks On Hand” showcases the art of local, regional and national graphic designers on skateboard decks. The work has been gracious...ly donated by each of the artists, and will be offered for sale as a fundraiser for improving the public skate park in the city of Jamestown. There will also be an after-party for the opening, downtown, with live music and surprises, and more details to be announced.

The exhibition will remain open through March and is the latest collaboration between local business and the art community. The 3rd On 3rd gallery is located on the floor above the Wright Gallery in the Arts Council - Reg Lenna Civic Center building.

"All Decks On Hand" is made possible by support from Suburban Blend, Active Artists Alliance, Arts Council For Chautauqua County & The New York State Council On The Arts State & Local Partnership funds.

The gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.

The opening night was pretty goddamn great, everything from the great art, the fact that any and all proceeds go to build a skatepark for breeding our future to the projection of classic skate videos. A big thanks to the gallery and the curators for pulling it off. A day that includes art, skateboarding, art on skateboards, ramps, bands and chilli is alright by us. It hangs for a month so make sure you go see it and all boards are up for auction so if you see something you like bid and it helps build a fucking skate park! ~THEM

Ed started skateboarding in 1985 in his hometown of Huntington Beach, California, with his friend Jason Lee. He turned pro for New Deal Skateboards in 1990. He left New Deal in 1992 to start the short-lived company "TV" with Mike Vallely. In 1993, Ed founded Toy Machine skateboards.

Outside of skateboarding, Ed is an artist and photographer. He began by painting the graphics for his skateboard company, TV and later for Toy Machine. In 2000, Ed's book of photography Teenage Smokers placed first in the Search For Art competition in Italy, winning $50,000. In the fall of 2001, Ed's artwork was featured in Juxtapoz magazine and in the 2002 produced an art exhibition, The Essentiel Disturbance, in the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) with the catalogue, The Golden Age of Neglet, published by Drago

Opening January 22, 2011 is Ed Templeton's The Cemetery of Reason, described as "the artist talking about his own life, his family and friends, the people he meets in the city and whilst travelling as a professional skateboarder. If the inspiration is autobiographical, the vast installation goes beyond the personal, and concerns important social and political issues."

The exhibition is curated by Thomas Caron.

One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books and television. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters, including MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in the hit movie “Supersize Me,” and Abraham Obama, the fusion of America’s 16th and 44th Presidents, an image widely discussed in the media as directly impacting the 2008 election. Glen E. Friedman is the most signiﬁcant photographer of his generation. His images of the early Dogtown skateboarders in the late 1970s along with the burgeoning hip-hop and punk rock scenes of the 80s and 90s have made him one of the most important photographers today. With the uncanny ability to capture images of people whose subculture was about to change the world, his subjects range from Jay Adams and Tony Alva to Run DMC, Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys to Minor Threat and Black Flag, among many others. Over the years, Friedman has been able to deﬁne the moments of the movements that deﬁned an era. This has cemented his place in history as an uncompromising, extremely gifted artist.

DUDES WE LIKE!- Raymond Pettibon

Raymond is most nown for his comic-like drawings with disturbing, ironic or ambiguous text, Pettibon's subject matter is sometimes violent and anti-authoritarian. From the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, he was closely associated with the punk rock band Black Flag and the record label SST Records, both founded by his older brother Greg Ginn. Beginning in the mid 1980s, he became a well-known figure in the contemporary art scene.

Pettibon works primarily with ink on paper and many of his early drawings are black and white, although he sometimes introduces color through the use of pencil, watercolor, collage, gouache or acrylic paint. Pettibon’s drawings encompass the spectrum of American culture from the deviances of marginal youth-culture to art, literature, sports, religion, politics, and sexuality. Pettibon’s works on paper uniquely combine the drawn image and text, both borrowed passages from literature and text written by Pettibon himself.

His solo show opens this weekend in NYC:
